Chandra Flett – Chair
Chandra Flett is currently the Co-Chair of the Board for Some Other Solutions for Crisis Prevention. Chandra formerly held the positions of Vice-Chair and Treasurer and has been a board member since 2011. Her interest in the effects of separation and divorce on children and mental health resulted in her interest in volunteering with Some Other Solutions.
Chandra is a partner in the law firm of Flett Manning Moore and has lived in Fort McMurray since 2005. She and her Fort McMurrayite Husband, Rob have 3 children, Lelend, Landan and Alyssa. When not busy with children’s activities, Chandra enjoys volleyball, yoga and river floating.
Jeannette Wanchuk – Vice Chair
Jeannette coordinates the Adult Literacy Program in Fort McMurray and teaches English to speakers of other languages. Jeannette has a Bachelor of Education (University of Alberta) and CERTESL certification (University of Saskatchewan).
Jeannette’s passion to help people in any capacity is what brought her to Some Other Solutions as a volunteer (5 years) and currently as a board member (4 years). Personal time is spent volunteering or enjoying the outdoors: walking, gardening, playing sports or just enjoying the fresh air.
Larry Hewko – Treasurer
Larry Hewko is the Chief Financial Officer of Fort McKay First Nation, a position he has held since 2005.
In this position, Larry plays a key role in developing, monitoring and evaluating overall corporate strategy with executive and Chief and Council. His responsibilities also include working with and supporting the executive team with key financial information, managing financial capital and defining the financial strategy.
Before joining Fort McKay First Nation, Larry joined the Accounting firm of Mowbrey Gil where he worked with First Nations in financial distress. He grew up on a farm in Grassland, Alberta and continues to spend much of his leisure time on his farm in the same region with his son.
Larry graduated from the University of Alberta in 1988 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1991 after articling with KPMG. He obtained his CA designation and went to work for a local accounting office where he opened his own practice from 1994 until 1999.
Valerie Dyck – Secretary
Valerie Dyck was born and raised in Manitoba, but moved to Fort McMurray in 1994. She has been employed by the Fort McMurray Catholic School Board as a teacher, classroom support teacher, vice-principal, and principal for the past 8 years.
I have just starting serving as a Board member in the spring of 2015 and am now the Secretary. Having worked in the school system, I know SOS provides fantastic support to so many members of our community in many ways. I want to support them so they can continue to provide their much-needed services.
In my spare time, I love travelling, being on the Birchwood Trails and quilting.
Dustin Greig – Director
Dustin joined the S.O.S Board of Directors in August of 2016 after seeking an opportunity to become more involved in the community. Dustin has called Fort McMurray home for 8 years and has been volunteering in the community since 2011.
When Dustin isn’t volunteering or working, you can be sure he is looking forward to an outdoor activity of some sort no matter the season.
Megan Scheie – Director
Megan Scheie has been a member of the Board since August of 2016. Megan has been volunteering in the community since 2010 when she moved to Fort McMurray from Edmonton. Her volunteering work with other United Way Organisations has educated her on the need to provide time not just money to keep the community growing and supported.
Professionally, Megan works in Human Resources and works as a Labour Relations Advisor at Suncor Energy. Megan attended the University of Lethbridge and graduated with a Management Degree. Outside of work, Megan enjoys travelling, spending time with friends and family, and attending local events in town.
Sarah Anderson – Director
Sarah is a new member of the Board of Directors at Some Other Solutions, joining in December 2016 as a way to give back to the community she’s lived in for just over a year and a half. She was drawn to SOS by the incredible work done to help people in times of crisis and those who have suffered a loss. Sarah learned about SOS while writing a story about the grief and loss support programming offered when she was working as a journalist in the community. Mental wellness and resiliency are causes close to her heart and after the wildfire when she was searching for a way to give back to this amazing community, Some Other Solutions was the perfect fit.
Sarah now works as a communications professional with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. She lives in North Parsons with her fiance Tyler. She loves to run, knit, and enjoy a really good cup of coffee.
Milena Joveska – Director
Milena was born and raised in Macedonia and has been calling Fort McMurray her home since 2014. Her compassionate nature lead her to be actively involved in the community by supporting various social causes as volunteer. She’s been serving as a Board member since December 2016 and is happy to be contributing towards the mission of Some Other Solutions.
Milena currently works as a facilitator for YMCA for Bridging the Gap program where she helps individuals in overcoming their barriers for employment. In her free time she enjoys reading, long walks and travelling.
Ryder Spence – Director
Ryder has been a director at Some Other Solutions since January 2017. Since his move to Fort McMurray in February 2016, Ryder has sought out a source to fuel his passion for volunteer work and found that when he was referred to Some Other Solutions. Ryder believes strongly in supporting the community that he lives and quickly identified with the values of SOS.
Ryder is currently a Commercial Relationship Manager and has worked with Servus Credit Union for seven years. He previously served members of the Credit Union at their Red Deer, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge branches, providing relationship management, credit analysis, and operating, real estate and construction financing. Ryder believes in building relationships with members through open, honest communication. When he is not at work Ryder enjoys snowboarding, exercising, and travelling.
Adair Thompson – Director
Adair has called Fort McMurray home since 2012 when he moved here with his wife Maggie and two children. He joined the board in August 2016 to help support the organization’s mission at a time of need in the community.
Adair is a professional engineer working at Suncor and studying for his MBA at the University of Alberta. He enjoys spending time with his family and cheering from the stands for his two young hockey players.
Annette LeBrun – Director
Annette LeBrun first came to be on the board of Some Other Solutions as an intern through the Leadership Wood Buffalo program in 2016 and has continued to be a member of the board after graduating from the program. Along with her husband, two children and family pets, Annette moved from Ottawa, ON and has called Fort McMurray home since 2012.
The leap to Fort McMurray came quickly and by surprise after having enlightened her husband on how to upload a resume! And the move could not have taken them to a better place. Annette found herself working in the social profit sector where she could dedicate herself to being a mother while fulfilling her passion to give back to the community.
Annette works with the Northern Lights Health Foundation, enjoys participating in a wide variety of community events, has sat on the board for the Fort McMurray Chess Club and is a co-founder of Conversations Wood Buffalo. Annette believes very strongly in the mission, vision and values of S.O.S. and is proud of the dedication that the staff and volunteers have for the programming and for members of this community.
