COVID-19: impacting our mental wellnessThe lives of children and youth in our community have been disrupted in so many ways since the pandemic started. Schools, childcare centres, colleges, rec centres, libraries, social groups…all of these spaces where youth went to build relationships, connections and feel safe have been impacted. And while many programs evolved online, what about the vulnerable community members who don’t have access to the internet or a device? How are they coping? How can we reach them? At Some Other Solutions, we are working hard with our community partners to ensure we find these young people and work with them on solutions to feel connected and supported during a physically disconnected time in our world. If you know someone who needs support, please reach out on their behalf or encourage them to touch base so we can help. Take care, Jason King Executive Director

Counselling need increasesMore and more clients are reaching out to Some Other Solutions for support with counselling. In January, we expanded our counselling services to provide support for anxiety, grief and loss, depression, self-esteem and more. This expanded scope has allowed us to better service the entire mental wellness of our community and we anticipate these numbers to increase further. Learn more about our counselling programs.

The SOS Crisis LineThere have been many changes around the world, and that includes right here at home with the Some Other Solutions Crisis Line. SOS partnered with CMHA/211 in Edmonton to cover the overnight shifts when call volumes became too busy for Waypoints. Our goal was to continue to offer a service to the community no matter the cost. People are facing job losses, temporary living accommodations, property damage and other stressful situations. The SOS crisis line was able to offer support to those facing stressful times, whether simply listening to them share their fears and frustrations or providing resources and guidance for next steps.

Caregiver stressCaregiver stress and mental health is at a heightened state since the pandemic. In fact, a recent report indicates more than 25 per cent of caregivers are in worse health. Locally, parents are reaching out to find support for their children, youth and themselves. As the weather changes and we head into winter, there is increased concern for the winter months. Stay connected with SOS as we continue to explore ways to better support caregivers over the coming months.

World Suicide Awareness DayEveryday, more than 10 Canadians on average die by suicide. And for every death by suicide, at least 7 to 10 survivors are significantly impacted by the loss. Sept. 10 was World Suicide Awareness Day and we are continuing to provide resources and support for those who are suicidal and those who are impacted by a loved one who may be at risk. In Medicine Hat, a string of suicides among young men has rocked the small city. Family and survivors are speaking out about what happened and what needs to change.
