Breaking the stigma around depression
Depression is often misunderstood and stigmatized. What might appear to just be a stretch of bad days, is actually a prevalent mental health condition that affects millions worldwide. In fact, approximately eight per cent of adults will experience a major depressive episode at some point in their lives. However, it’s important to recognize that depression is treatable and seeking help is the first step towards healing and recovery.
What does depression look like?
Depression doesn’t always look the same for every person. It could range from persistent feelings of sadness and emptiness to losing interest in activities someone used to love. For some, they experience feelings of exhaustion, changes in appetite or weight, or difficulty concentrating and/or making decisions. More than that, depression can make people feel worthless, hopeless and even lead to thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
As people withdraw from social interactions and activities, they feel disconnected from friends and family. This isolation perpetuates the cycle of depression and makes it even harder for individuals who are struggling to reach out for help or engage in activities that might help them feel relief.
