Choosing self care for young people
It’s almost exam season. If you’re finishing high school this year, there's added pressure when it comes to the importance of those final marks for your transcript. You might already have a plan for September or you’re still working it out.
No matter what the situation is for you, all young people who are in their last years of grade school are feeling all the feelings at this time of year.
Taking care of your mental health in times like these is paramount. It’s easy to get in your head and elevate your anxiety to unhealthy levels. Instead, it’s time to channel some inner strength and practice consistent, important self-care rituals.
We’ve compiled some of the most common, unhealthy coping strategies and are offering our favourite alternatives.
Choose the right self care approach for you
If you’re feeling like your to-do list is epic…
Instead of staying up all night to try and cross things off, try the opposite. Set a “quitting time” and stick to it. Sleep is a vital tool when it comes to your mental health. Your brain needs a break and if you give yourself space to sleep properly, you’re going to wake up feeling refreshed, more productive and ready to work.
If you’re struggling to retain and process information…
Instead of staring at your computer and reading the same sentence over and over again, try stepping away for some fresh air. Take 20 minutes and go for a walk (preferably outside). Exercise and moving your body gives your body and brain the opportunity for a reset. Clear your head, take some deep breaths and then go back and tackle the problem with a fresh perspective.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and out of control…
Instead of accepting this to be “fine,” try reaching out for support. Talk to a friend, a mentor or a counsellor. Counsellors can help you learn coping techniques and strategies to help you through periods of stress and anxiety.
You’re not alone
This is a stressful period of time. We aren’t going to sugarcoat it. But allowing yourself the time and space to practice self care will give you a stronger feeling of being in control and give you the mental capacity to tackle whatever curveball comes your way next.
