Information Overload: When Everything is Just Too Much

All our lives have changed quickly over the past few weeks and many of us are still trying to figure out what this means for the future. Every day we are constantly being bombarded with new information and sometimes it seems too much to handle all at once.

You’re not alone!

There is no shame in feeling anxious or fearful. In some ways, these can be healthy emotions which can enable you to act more safely and cautiously. But these thoughts don’t have to overwhelm you.

Here are some tips to get you through these tough times:

1. Find a Few, Trustworthy Sources of Information
With so much information constantly being released, there is also the risk of misinformation. This can add to our worry. If a social media post upsets you or elicits strong emotions, trying fact checking yourself with reliable, credible sources. Here are some great, repudiated sources of information:

2. Look for The Helpers
”When I was a boy and would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Famously said by Mr. Rogers, this quote reminds us that when things are bad, we can always find hope in watching the ‘helpers’. We have already seen great cases of inspiration from nurses and doctors, to the friendly neighbour buying groceries for an elderly person. Sometimes it is easy to be angry during these times. I’m sure we have all seen the stories of people hoarding supplies. While these stories can be upsetting, make sure you pay attention to all those people being mindful, caring and helpful during this time.

3. Stay Connected
What a better time to stay home? With technology, it is easier than ever to keep in contact with your friends, family and co-workers. Reach out. Maybe send a message to someone you have not spoken to for a while, it may just make their day. Make it a routine to stay in contact with people, even in those days that seem harder than usual. Sometimes it may even seem like a chore, but human connection is essential.

4. Don’t Forget the Things that You Love and Explore New Things
Is music your thing? Perfect. You don’t have to give that up. Make sure you are giving yourself enough time throughout the day to just relax and enjoy simple things. Bored? Try something new! Maybe pick up that gaming controller and play with your kid. You might just have more fun than you think. Always wanted to learn to draw. Well, you’re in luck. There are thousands of websites and videos out there just waiting for you. The possibilities are endless, and this is the best time to learn a new skill or pick up a new hobby.

5. Take Care of Yourself
I’m sure most of us have been on a plane and heard the line a hundred times, “In case of an emergency, take care of yourself first.” In life, this can sometimes be applicable too. Sometimes we get so worried about taking care of everyone around us, that we forget about ourselves. Practicing good self-care will help us better take care of those whom we love the most.
