National Child Day: A commitment to our children

Children play an important role in our lives. They are active participants in our community who can contribute in a meaningful way. Children also teach us how to live in the moment, to simplify a complex situation and to remind us of the joy of everyday activities.

November 20 in Canada is National Child Day — a day to recognize our country’s commitment to upholding the rights of our children. Celebrated in Canada since 1993, it’s an important opportunity to look at tough issues that our children are facing every day, and finding ways to elevate and empower them.

How to celebrate National Child Day

We’ve put together a list of ways you can get involved on National Child Day in Canada this year!

  1. Learn more about children’s rights! Check out the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child as starting points to expand your knowledge.

  2. Plan an activity for your family, organization, or school. It could be as simple as reading a rights-focused book together or having a conversation with children in your life about their rights. Check out this activity kit from the Government of Canada with some great ideas.

  3. Ask children how they would like to celebrate! It is their day, and they may have some unique ideas for a safe, physically distant National Child Day.

  4. Spread the word. Tell your family, neighbours, and colleagues about National Child Day to help raise awareness. Share information on social media or on your website.

  5. Follow National Child’s Day on social media.  Follow @NatlChildDay on Twitter. They will be sharing articles, quick facts, links to resources, and local National Child Day event listings throughout the month of November.

  6. Show your true colours and wear BLUE in support of National Child Day. Make it a community or team building event by encouraging your friends and colleagues to join in. Snap a photo and use the hashtags #NationalChildDay or #NCD2020.

Remember, no action is too small.
