We are all impacted by mental health

There are challenges in our world that are often brushed aside if people can’t find a direct correlation. “That doesn’t impact me.” “I don’t know anyone who has experienced that.”

Mental health isn’t that challenge. Mental health is one area of our global community where each and every one of us are impacted, both directly and indirectly.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, an opportunity to take a moment and explore your own personal mental health, but also to step back and appreciate the challenges others in your community are facing.

“Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality.”

We talk a lot about mental health in the community and how to bring a mental wellness lens into your daily life. From regular exercise to eating healthy, taking time for mindfulness and more, there is a lot you can do on the personal side of things to ensure your mental health is cared for. But what about the office?

Expanding a mental health focus at work

Creating a positive mental health environment at the office is an important part of employee culture. By taking steps to establish effective communication, support and resources, programming and more, employers have an opportunity not only to improve the mental health of their employees, but also to improve the productivity of their organization!

  • Communication. Through consistent and effective communication, employers can make mental health a priority and reduce the stigma. Share stories, engage in a conversation about mental health and ensure your team knows that you want an open dialogue on the topic.

  • Support. Do you have a process or procedure if someone raises a mental health concern in your office? Establishing a consistent approach to receiving the concerns and tackling them head on can go a long way to showing you care as an employer.

  • Resources. Fact-based resources and access to mental health counselling is a priority for employers as we move into the next phase of the pandemic. It’s important for employees to know they can reach out for help, and access support without feeling any stigma from their company.

  • Programming. Why not take it a step further and bring in a mental health program for your employees? Through education and awareness programs, employers can set a strong foundation for a supportive culture that respects and highlights the importance of mental health.
