Maintain your mental health this summer
The days are longer, the weather is warm, and outdoor activities are aplenty! However, the change in routine and sometimes a self-inflicted pressure to cram in all of the fun can lead to stress and burnout.
Here are a few of our favourite ways to maintain your mental health this summer.
Keep a routine. Sleeping in and unplanned adventures can be one of the highlights of summer, but a basic routine can give you structure and stability to make it through the season without feeling fried. Maintain regular sleep patterns, mealtimes and exercise schedules as much as possible.
Stay hydrated! Did you know dehydration can lead to mood swings, tiredness and impact your decision-making? Drink at least eight glasses of water a day and consider carrying a water bottle with you at all times, even if you’re just heading out to the store.
Be realistic about what you can accomplish. When fun activities start to feel like work and obligations, you might be going too car. Try to set realistic goals and don’t overcommit yourself. Maybe you need to protect a weekend for sitting around with a book. Remember, not every minute needs to be scheduled.
Limit screen time. With more free time, it’s easy to see your screen time increase. Whether you’re binge-watching shows on Netflix or scrolling through Instagram, too much screen time can lead to feelings of isolation and anxiety. Set time limits on your phone and devices and come up with alternative offline activities during relaxation time.
Reach out for help. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, if you’re experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety or other mental health issues, reach out to Some Other Solutions for help. Our counsellors are trained to support you with whatever challenge you’re facing.
Summer can be a wonderful time to relax, recharge, and reconnect with yourself and others. Remember, it's not about having the perfect summer, but about finding joy and peace in the little moments.
