SOS is a Crisis Prevention Agency that supports individuals who are experiencing stress, emotional distress, loneliness, or suicidal thoughts to the Wood Buffalo Region since 1986. We help empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds to find the tools and resources they need to better manage life challenges through three main programs: Community Outreach Program (Mentors, Youth Leadership, Summer Rec Program); Information and Referral Program (24-hour crisis line ); Health and Wellness Program (Counselling, Grief Support, and Suicide Prevent).

SOS’ Health and Wellness Program is responsible for providing client-focused counselling services to adults, children, couples, and family systems, on issue relation to mental health, addiction, stress, trauma, etc. The services provided will focus on assessment, case planning, treatment, and referral to community resources, as necessary. Other duties include, intake, crisis intervention, workshops development and facilitation, presentation, group sessions and community engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting clients to overcoming disadvantage, exclusion, and social isolation.

  • Provide therapeutic counselling to referred individuals (includes self-referrals) through individual or group sessions.

  • Working with other healthcare professionals, social workers, outreach workers, community support workers, and counsellors at SOS and in the community.

  • Answering clients inquires over the phone, via email or through correspondence.

  • Completing all necessary administrative paperwork (e.g., incident reports, case notes, number of clients served, client letters, monthly reports to Manager, etc.).

  • Complete safety plans, danger assessments and other necessary assessments to help maintain client safety and guide client-management.

  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with Outreach Team and other departments to provide effective and holistic services to clients.

  • Assist as needed in the planning and execution of organizational awareness events.

  • Assist as needed in the co-facilitation of community presentations on as part of SOS awareness and prevention efforts.

  • Foster connections in the Region with service providers, Victim services, Athabasca Tribal Council, school districts, other non-profit agencies, etc. to ensure the best possible service delivery for clients.

  • Provide Virtual and telephone counselling.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or Clinical Social Work.

  • Professional Certification: Candidate must be registered with a professional body

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years clinical experiences

  • Must have an up to date, Criminal Record Check, vulnerable Sector Check, Child Youth Intervention Check, proof of Education and certification Credentials.

Knowledge skills and abilities

  • Experience working with families and Indigenous population

  • Exceptional clinical ability and judgment

  • Significant knowledge of therapeutic mental and substance abuse

  • Ability to manage high-risk cases

  • Knowledge of community resources and programs

  • Trauma specific training and/or experience is an asset.

  • Current Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Current Emergency First Aid and CPR Certification.

Position Profile

  • The weekly commitment of 37.5 hours, with flexibility in scheduling.
